What are the primary characteristics of leafcutter bees?
- Leafcutter bees are summer bees and take about 35 to 45 days to emerge from their cocoons once the bees are placed outside in the spring.
- These super pollinators need daytime high temperatures to reach near 80 degrees to be able to get out and get to work - higher is better. Make sure they are located in a sunny area of your yard or garden.
- After they emerge they generally live about five to six weeks and the females lay eggs during that period, which they wrap in leaf material.
- Leafcutters are solitary bees and are not aggressive. They do not interact with other bees.
- In quantities used in yards and gardens - 150 to 250 bees - they don't noticeably damage foliage.
- They do not need a water source since they extract sufficient moisture from the leaves they use in the nest to live.
- Leafcutters only forage about three hundred yards from their nesting block, unless there isn't sufficient bloom in the area, in which case they will leave the area to find bloom and have difficulty returning.
